Position

Nanometrics is actively seeking an experienced, highly talented Seismologist to provide scientific leadership in support of our data processing and instrument design groups. The successful candidate will be responsible for expanding our seismic data processing initiatives and customer deliverables to cover a broad range of post-acquisition data products. This new position will provide the successful candidate with significant opportunities for research on a broad range of fronts from magnitude studies to PSHA to network modelling. Publication of research results will be an important aspect of the position along with presentation at major conferences. 

 

Job Duties

  • Operate as the company’s internal consultant on seismic data processing, analysis and interpretation

  • Work closely with new and existing customers to identify and address opportunities for post-acquisition data processing and research

  • Develop regional seismic hazard models by collecting and processing earthquake related data, running/writing seismicity related computer codes, documenting and presenting the results.

  • Development of ground motion prediction equations using stochastic and empirical methods

  • Develop methodologies to improve upon conventional interpretation approaches, including writing new computer algorithms to manipulate data

  • Participation in international projects for networking seismological infrastructures, earthquake monitoring and tsunami warning

  • Supervise all aspects of scientific research in the Seismology group

  • Maintain an adequate level of technical competency in geophysics, communications and computer sciences as they relate to Nanometrics' products and services

  • Maintain accurate up-to-date records in the company CRM system

 

Requirements

  • 5 - 10 years of practical related experience

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in seismology or related field

  • Proficiency in scientific programming languages, including MatLab, Java, C++, Fortran etc.

  • Scientific communication and presentation skills 

 

Assets

  • Experience in regional seismicity studies

  • Experience in subduction related earthquake hazard studies

  • Experience with Probabilistic Seismic Hazard analysis

  • Experience with characterization of shallow site condition and site response analysis

  • Proficiency in scientific programming languages, including MatLab, Java, C++, Fortran etc.

  • GIS or GMT knowledge a plus

  • Previous experience processing or locating earthquakes in real time seismic networks.
