Mechanical Designer

Nanometrics is growing!  We are looking for a versatile Mechanical Designer to join our design team. Our products collect, transport, and manage seismic data in challenging environments worldwide, from polar tundra and glaciers to tropical jungle, and from mountaintops to the ocean floor. As we enable larger fleet deployments, we are looking to you to help us make our solutions more usable, reliable, and affordable.


  • Create product concepts that address functionality, usability, and appearance that are appropriate to specific use cases.

  • Craft complete mechanical designs for electronic instruments intended for outdoor use, such as data recorders, solar power and battery systems, radio modems, cables, transport cases, and structures such as seismic vaults and antenna masts.

  • Introduce designs to manufacturing with complete part drawings, manufacturing documentation and training, and contribute to planning of new product builds.

  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing by process improvement and root cause analysis of issues with mechanical parts and assemblies, sharing knowledge with assembly, test, quality assurance, and procurement staff to support efficient operations and quality products.

  • A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent education and experience

  • Formal education or equivalent experience in product design

  • 3 - 10 years of professional experience, preferably with a mix of new product mechanical design, sustaining, and manufacturing experience

  • Excellent written, graphical, and verbal communication skills

  • A track record of delivering manufacturable, functional, and correct designs

  • Strong experience with mechanical CAD software, preferably SolidWorks


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Design mockup and prototype creation

  • Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), Design for Excellence (DFX)

  • New Product Introduction (NPI)

  • Manufacturing assembly and test process design

  • Supplier qualification and supply chain support

  • Outdoor or underwater enclosures rated to IP67 or better

  • Low to medium-volume casting and molding technologies

  • Electromagnetic shielding design
