AUTHENTICATING CENTAUR (CTR4-3A)


At the heart of Nanometrics’ Global Authenticated Monitoring Solution is the latest version of Nanometrics’ world renowned Centaur digital recorder (model CTR4-3A). The Authenticating Centaur is an integrated, durable instrument which ensures ease of installation and maintenance; minimizing potential points of failure and providing unmatched outcome certainty.

 

The Centaur features true 24-bit performance with three channels simultaneously sampled at two sample rates for high and low-frequency applications, at up to 5,000 sps. Advanced precision calibration outputs and network timing functionality further ensure data integrity.

SYSTEM AND DATA INTEGRITY 

Tamper proof hardware and hardware digital signatures ensure end-to-end integrity with combined four stages of protection. The factory-installed, internal case tamper switch and support for two external tamper switches detects any attempt of unauthorized access to the digitizer and station infrastructure. Integrated hardware authentication provides digital signing

of data using DSA, or ECDSA digital signature standards to authenticate the CD-1.1 data stream, ensuring data integrity.

DIGITIZER ROBUSTNESS

The rugged, waterproof aluminum enclosure of the Centaur provides ample protection from harsh environments, including an ingress protection rating of IP68 for continuous immersion. Centaur is also resistant to electrostatic discharge and lightning surges (IEC61000-4-5, 2kV/4kV). 

 

The data stream is equally robust, providing low-latency transmission of continuous time series data from the digitizer to the data center. The Centaur utilizes Last-In First-Out (LIFO) data backfill protocol in the event of a communication interruptions to ensure completeness of data. For configuration, calibration and monitoring, the Centaur’s intuitive web-based GUI provides enhanced controls and state-of-health metrics, as well as sensor calibration capabilities.

INTEROPERABILITY

The Authenticating Centaur’s broad geophysical sensor support includes: Weak motion broadband seismometers; Class-A strong motion accelerometers; Passive geophone sensors; SeismoWave MB3a microbarometer, and; Gill MaxiMet GMX500 weather station via RS232.

The Centaur provides the optimal mix of performance, versatility and configurability, with features such as:

With over 30 years of experience developing high performance, industry-leading seismic instruments, Nanometrics’ sensors are used in more seismic networks around the globe than any other seismometers of their kind. Nanometrics’ seismometers are available in a variety of corner frequencies and form factors to facilitate vault, surface or downhole deployments. These versatile seismometers are low power, highly accurate, rugged, reliable and easy-to-install.

Pairing Nanometrics’ seismic sensors with the Nanometrics’ Centaur digitizer provides enhanced sensor control and status, including: UVW/XYZ mode, short/long period mode, firmware updates, temperature, mass position, case tilt, digital bubble level, serial number and factory information.

To support infrasound monitoring applications, a default sensor for the Seismowave MB3a analog microbarometer which connects the MB3a to the Centaur is available in the sensor library. The sensor profile defines key sensor attributes and transfer function allowing the generation of complete RESP or dataless SEED response files for the Centaur and MB3a. All standard sensor digitizing, streaming, and recording capabilities of the Centaur are available for the MB3a and the Centaur’s calibration circuit ensures full and proper calibration of the MB3a. For other makes or types of microbarometer a custom sensor can easily be defined in the sensor library.

 

The Centaur can also acquire weather data at primary infrasound stations from the Gill Instruments Maximet GMX500 compact weather station (with GPS option) via serial port. The Centaur associates the data with CD-1.1 weather channel data streaming, and for State of Health (SOH) data archiving on the external SD media, and for NP or Seedlink streaming.

CALIBRATION ACCURACY

The calibration capabilities of the authenticated Centaur (CTR4-3A) are compatible with a broad range of geophysical sensors including seismic and infrasound sensors. The Centaur’s calibration circuit includes a current source of up to ±30 mA and a voltage source of up to ±10 V with amplitude accuracy of ±1% for peak amplitudes from ±10 V to ±5 mV, and from ±30 mA to ±30 µA providing optimal signal to noise ratio (SNR) and accuracy performance for calibrating seismometers, geophones, and microbarometers across their operating bandwidth.

 

A synthetic waveform signal generator for calibration provides the ability to generate on-demand sine wave and pseudo-random binary (PRB) signals. This feature allows you to configure the frequency or pulse-width, duration, amplitude, as well as lead-in and lead-out silence intervals for the selected waveform. In addition, the Centaur’s waveform file playback function also allows you to generate any specific signals you wish to define and upload to the Centaur.

COMMUNICATIONS

Nanometrics’ Libra VSAT is the first – and only – fully integrated satellite communications system in the world specifically designed for seismic and environmental data acquisition.

The Libra system is a proven, reliable data communications solution with over 1,200 remote sites and 60 hubs operating in more than 30 countries around the world. Each Libra remote site is equipped with a Cygnus 210 transceiver which can also acquire a wide range of IP and serial data types. With its minimal power requirements, Cygnus remote stations can be solar powered and completely independent of any established ground infrastructure. Comprehensive state-of-health and diagnostic information are continuously acquired, monitored and presented via a series of web pages.
